William Matuszeski Receives 2008 Sustained Achievement Award Renewable Natural Resources Foundation recognizes leadership in protection and conservation initiatives
(Baltimore, MD) -- The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay is honored to announce that our Board Chair, William Matuszeski, has been selected by the Renewable Natural Resources Foundation (RNRF), as the recipient of the 2008 Sustained Achievement Award. The award recognizes long-term contributions and commitment of an individual to the protection and conservation of natural resources. Matuszeskis 40-year career has demonstrated leadership in applying scientific principals to real-world problems in order to conserve and protect renewable natural resources. The award will be presented at the annual meeting of the RNRF Board of Directors on Monday, November 3, 2008, in Potomac, Maryland. BMat, as he is called by all who know him, has the unique talent of being able to inspire, entertain and get things done. He is able to bring out the best in those around him and chooses to do what is right, not what is easy. The Bay watershed is much better off that BMat has devoted the last 17 years to its restoration and protection, stated Peter Marx, Associate Director for Communications, Chesapeake Bay Program Office, U.S. EPA. BMat was selected because of his long-standing career in fostering cooperation among scientific agencies, encouraging the utilization of science in natural resources management, and advocating public education so that citizens could make decisions that contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment. During 13 years at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), BMat served as executive director of National Marine Fisheries Service, director of Private Sector Initiatives, and deputy assistant administrator of Ocean Services and Coastal Zone Management. He then moved to the Environmental Protection Agency, (EPA) where he worked for several years as associate assistant administrator for Water. In November 1991, BMat became director of EPA's Chesapeake Bay Program Office. The Chesapeake Bay Program is the federal-state partnership responsible for the restoration of the bay watershed and includes the states of Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and the District of Columbia. --next page--

He facilitated collaborative approaches among EPA, NOAA, USDA Forest Service, U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Park Service and the Department of Defense. Multiple state agencies and universities also participated in bay restoration research and implementation during BMats tenure. These efforts culminated in the signing of Chesapeake 2000 by the governors of the region, the mayor of Washington, DC and the EPA Administrator. Since retiring in 2001, BMat has continued to contribute by serving on the boards of the Center for Watershed Protection, Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, and Hudson River Foundation. The Renewable Natural Resources Foundation (RNRF) a consortium of professional, scientific and educational organizations advances sciences and public education in renewable natural resources; promotes the application of sound, scientific practices in managing and conserving renewable natural resources; fosters cooperation among professional, scientific and educational organizations having leadership responsibilities for renewable natural resources; and provides services for its members at a common site. RNRF was incorporated in Washington, D.C., in 1972, as a nonprofit, public, tax-exempt organization described in the Internal Revenue Code §501(c)(3). Contributions to the foundation are tax deductible to the extent permitted by federal law. The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that serves as The Voice of the Bay through its Bay Journal and other programs and partnerships to improve the health of the Bay and its rivers.
