Thank you and congratulations to all the hard-working Project Clean Stream volunteers! Over one hundred twenty-two clean-up sites were registered this year! We'll update this page as we tally results -so far we have the results from 108 sites, totaling 2,821 volunteers (and three dogs) who cleaned-up over 168,000 pounds of trash! Interesting items found include an LP album, a container of lead paint, wigs, a toilet, a $1 bill, two credit cards, a toaster, three sinks, a Mariah Carey poster, over a dozen bicycles, and tires galore.

Project Clean Stream 2009 is slated for the first Saturday in April.

Project Clean Stream is an annual April stream clean up held in Central and Eastern Maryland. In 2007, over 2,500 volunteers turned out at more than 100 clean-up sites! Thank you to our sponsor, the Chesapeake Bay Trust.

History: Since its inception in the Jones Falls watershed (by Irvine Nature Center) over 30 years ago, this annual event has grown from a local trash pick up to encompass about 100 sites around Maryland. New sites are brought on each year as we expand. Partners include local watershed associations, who help coordinate volunteers and sites in their region, and local government staff, who coordinate trash removal by providing dumpsters or curb-side pickup.

• Folks in the Patuxent River watershed are encouraged to participate in the Patuxent River Clean up, also on April 5. Contact Lauren Webster at 301-249-8200 or visit www.cleanpatuxent.org for more information.

• Finally, DC area volunteers are encouraged to participate in the Alice Ferguson Foundation's Potomac Clean up, also in April.
